Null Sec (aka 0.0 or 00) space is where the majority of empires live. You are encouraged to claim that space through a process called Sovereignty and then develop this space to suit your own needs. You can have it encourage exploration, mining, ratting, building supers, or travel. Holding space encourages groups to fight over the 'best' space. They band together in different groups to hold that space or accomplish goals, which is the real Magic of eve.
You can skip ahead at any point here using this table of contents.
Let me give you an easy break down on population. Per the Eve Data AMA during the 2025 Fanfest, https://youtu.be/fyA7Xv1w4Do?t=66 Players make up the following percentage based on where they live. Along with how much space they own.
High sec: 50% of the population, 12.7% of the space
Null sec: 35% of the population, 39.4% of the space
Low sec: 7% of the population, 9.57% of the space
Wormholes: 6% to 7% of the population, 30.9% of the space
Understanding the scale of how eve players structure themselves is important.
You can fly around defending your space as a solo player. This is the toughest part of eve because it's just you, by yourself, and if you run into a single person who matches or beats your ship, you die. Or they might bring two people and then you're really in trouble. At three additional people, it's VERY tough to stay alive.
You should join a small fleet. The smallest ones of these are usually called 'small ganging', which means that you fly around in a small group, with people usually warping themselves, and it encourages people to think for themselves and bring useful ships. Past like 30 people, it goes into a different category. Because most of eve is what is called N+1 game play, that small gang might lose to a larger gang, unless they are specifically setup to avoid it or fight against their weaknesses.
You could join a BIG fleet. This usually is the norm for null sec players in larger groups. You have an FC (Fleet Commander) warp you around, you anchor up on them so you don't have to think where you need to fly to, and you just focus on locking and shooting targets, aka hitting F1, aka F1 monkey! :) This can go from 30 to 254 players in a single warp. Multiple large fleets can work together, but the fleet commander decides what to do for each fleet.
You MUST join a corporation! Playing eve solo is boring, corporations is what makes it fun. Corporations are the core that small fleets are organized from. This is similar to guilds in other games, where you band together for a common cause. These are run as a dictatorship with a single CEO assigning roles, with directors helping the CEO. You hang out on comms, you work together, but there is a point of stress here. Spies could infiltrate these groups, causing you to leak information to your enemies. If a spy infiltrates your corporation, they could leak intel, steal stuff, or even delete it: https://www.eveonline.com/news/view/band-of-brothers-alliance-disbanded
Alliances are made up of corporations. These are ways for small groups to band together. They control the Sovereignty system through corporations actions. You can see what space they hold through pages such as https://www.verite.space/ that shows maps.
Coalitions are groups of alliances, giving each one their own Sovereignty to deal with, but banding together during big fights. These are the groups that major news events like M2- to happen. https://www.ccpgames.com/news/2021/the-most-expensive-video-game-battle-ever-earns-two-guinness-world-records
You can choose where you want to fit into this scale.
You can EASILY see this from your show info in game. It shows your player name, in what corporation, what alliance you are in, and people in the know will know the coalition they are a part of. For instance in the above example, you can see:
The person's name is noraus. (I am not 100% sure this is the right character but maybe?)
noraus has some titles attached to his name, these are customized by the CEO or director of the corporation, implying they are permabanned. :D
In the corporation Nuwa Foundation.
Part of the alliance Fraternity, the second largest in the game Q1 2026.
Which is part of Winter Coalition, one of the two major coalitions in the game, the other being Imperium.
You can use the name to find a zkillboard. https://zkillboard.com/character/1618197191/ (Note, most leaders don't actually fly all that often!)
You can use zkillboard to find the actual pilot id, in this case: 1618197191
You can see their EVEWho or in game list of Employment History to see where they have been. https://evewho.com/character/1618197191 In this case, this character also has a killboard that shows where they had the most kills under 'Top / All Time' that the most kills was in The Therapists, Fraternity., and RvB -Blue Republic. https://zkillboard.com/character/1618197191/topalltime/
Pasted into https://localthreat.xyz/ we can see he is pretty harmless. :)
